JOB ANALYSIS

ARCB 2022 Job Analysis Summary

The American Reflexology Certification Board (ARCB) conducts job analysis activities to help ensure that its certification examinations reflect the knowledge, skills, abilities, and professional competencies relevant to reflexology practice. ARCB has used national job-analysis activities to support its credentialing program since 1991.

In 2022, ARCB conducted a national job-analysis survey from September through November. The survey was distributed to certified and non-certified reflexologists, educators, and practitioners and included 148 items across 20 domains addressing reflexology practice, training, professional experience, techniques, client-related activities, ethics, and the profession.

The survey received 106 responses representing 33 states. Psychometric Solutions reviewed the survey data, respondent characteristics, job-analysis domains, and available certification-examination information. Analyses included descriptive statistics, comparisons between job-analysis and examination content, and evaluation of relationships among selected professional and training variables.

The analysis identified useful information about current reflexology practice while also identifying opportunities to improve the direct alignment between the job-analysis survey and the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for professional reflexology practice. Psychometric Solutions recommended that future job-analysis activities more explicitly identify core KSAs, streamline the survey instrument, and strengthen alignment between job-related activities and certification examination content.

ARCB used these findings as part of a broader examination-development process. Working with Psychometric Solutions and subject-matter experts, ARCB refined examination domains and developed content specifications designed to assess competencies required for reflexology practice. Proposed domains and subdomains were shared with the reflexology community through a stakeholder survey and public town hall, and stakeholder feedback was considered before the specifications were adopted.

ARCB recognizes that job analysis is an ongoing process. Future job-analysis activities will build upon the 2022 study by more explicitly delineating and validating the tasks, competencies, knowledge, skills, and abilities that characterize proficient reflexology performance and ensuring that certification examination specifications remain aligned with current professional practice. Psychometric Solutions also recommended conducting job analyses more frequently to support continued relevance as the profession evolves.
